What Are the Healthy Homes Standards?

The Healthy Homes Standards cover five key areas:

Insulation
Ceiling and underfloor insulation must meet minimum R-values and be in good condition. 

Heating
Rental properties must have an approved fixed heating source capable of warming the main living room to at least 18°C.

Ventilation
Extractor fans must be installed in bathrooms and kitchens, and windows must be openable.

Moisture Ingress and Drainage
Properties must have efficient drainage systems, and subfloors must have moisture barriers if necessary.

Draught Stopping
Landlords must eliminate unreasonable gaps or holes that cause noticeable draughts.

Proper insulation is crucial in maintaining a healthy, energy-efficient home. Under the Healthy Homes Standards:

Ceiling insulation must be at least 120mm thick and meet minimum R-values based on the climate zone. 

Underfloor insulation is compulsory where reasonably practicable.

If existing insulation was installed before 2016 and doesn't meet current standards, it will likely need upgrading or topping up.
